The term “constipation” (also known as costiveness or dyschezia) refers to bowel movements that are infrequent or hard to pass. It is a common cause of painful defecation. Severe constipation includes obstipation (failure to pass stools or gas) and “faecal impaction,” which can progress to bowel obstruction and become life-threatening.

Constipation is a symptom with many causes, both mechanical and functional.  There may be a blockage in the bowel (that obstructs defecation) or what is known as 'colonic hypo-mobility' (slow transit of faeces through the bowel).

Causes of colonic slow transit constipation include poor dietary habits, emotional factors, endocrine disorders such as hypothyroidism, certain side effects of medications, and increasingly, heavy metal toxicity. Because constipation is a symptom, not a disease, effective treatment of constipation involves determining the underlying cause.  While laxatives may be needed short-term to unblock the colon, prolonged use can be harmful because they override natural peristalsis (the waves of contraction and relaxation of smooth muscle that move contents through the gastrointestinal tract).  A vital part of treating constipation is encouraging peristalsis.

Constipation is common and can be treated. In fact without a well-functioning colon and regular daily elimination pattern you can’t claim to be healthy – it’s that important!  Constipation impairs cognition, causes irritability and headaches, increases toxic build-up in the body and leads to degenerative disease. 

Constipation is one of the first things to check for and treat with halitosis.  Poor bowel elimination is going to affect your breath, because your mouth and bowel are connected, being different parts of the same alimentary canal.

Natural health treatment options could include herbal and nutritional supplements to support good elimination, attention to resolving underlying emotional issues and restrictive life patterns, a series of colonic irrigation treatments to flush out toxic bowel pockets and changes in dietary habits.  Fibre in the diet creates bulk that helps bind and move waste matter through the colon. Psyllium hulls and flaxseeds are good examples of fibre-rich prebiotics.

    This works perfect for digestive system and indigestion.

    If you don't have regular bowel movement then I highly recommend this tea. Take with caution though, you don't want a really sore gut and running to the loo all day. Usually I just have a tea before bed and in the morning the action happens. This time I was really backed up, feeling crook with a bloated tummy, I hadn't been to the loo for 2 weeks then I remembered this tea and this morning HOOORAY, I had 2 teas last night. I know when its working because I have a slight tummy cramp followed by a rumbling sound
