Hot Flushes Relief

Some women going through menopause experience hot flushes (also known as 'night sweats' or 'hot flashes'). Menopausal women relate that in their extreme state, when your system is out of balance hot flushes are a feeling of intense heat in combination with sweating and an elevated heartbeat, usually lasting only a few minutes but in some cases up to thirty minutes for each flush. The sensation begins in the face, chest or back of the neck. After this, they can spread throughout the whole body. Some women feel as if they are going to faint. In addition to being an internal sensation, the surface of the skin, especially on the face, becomes hot to the touch.

In addition to being an internal sensation, the surface of the skin, especially on the face, becomes hot to the touch.

It may occur a few times a  week or every few minutes throughout the day. Hot flushes can appear several years before menopause starts and last for years afterwards. Not all woman undergoing menopause experience hot flushes. If a younger woman keeps getting the sensation, it is important that a healthcare practitioner is contacted as it could suggest complications with her pituitary gland.

Hot flushes are a normal part of menopause.  It’s important to moderate them if they are causing discomfort or distress, but not to eliminate them.  Menopausal women often refer to moderately occurring hot flushes as an energy surge, and appreciate their warming effect on cold winter days!

There are natural remedies that may help alleviate the symptoms of hot flushes. Chaste Tree has traditionally been used for the temporary relief of pre-menstrual tension and associated conditions such as fluid retention, headaches, crampy periods and sore breasts. This herb exerts an effect on the pituitary gland which is most receptive in the early morning. The main action of this herb is to correct hormonal imbalances, particularly oestrogen dominance. Sea kelp is beneficial for establishing proper thyroid function and thus promoting proper hormonal balance.

Furthermore, Don Quai possesses constituents for nourishing female glands and helps strengthen all internal body organs and muscles. It also helps to rebuild the blood and improve the conditions of the mother-to-be; to dissolve blood clots and to loosen tight muscles. It is a good blood purifier and cleanser, helping to increase circulation and is useful in aiding recovery from an accident if internal bleeding and body bruises exist. Dong Quai contains generous quantities of vitamin E, cobalt and iron.

Here some personal and environmental factors that can sometimes trigger hot flushes:

  • Acidic and spicy food (e.g. pickles, citrus, tomatoes and cayenne, ginger, pepper)
  • Hot drinks (particularly coffee, black tea, colas)
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Hydrogenated fats or saturated fats (found in meat, margarine)
  • Stress and anger (especially if not expressed)
  • Hot weather
  • Hot tubs and saunas
  • Tobacco or marijuana
  • Intense exercise
