“I feel the same way about disco as I do about herpes”
Hunter S Thompson
Herpes zoster (or simply zoster), commonly known as shingles and also known as zona, is a viral disease characterised by a painful skin rash with blisters in a limited area on one side of the body (left or right), often in a stripe.
The initial infection with varicella zoster virus (VZV) causes the acute, short-lived illness chickenpox which generally occurs in children and young adults. Once an episode of chickenpox has resolved, the virus is not eliminated from the body but can go on to cause shingles — an illness with very different symptoms — often many years after the initial infection. Even though they sound the same, herpes zoster is not the same disease as herpes simplex, despite the name similarity and the fact that both belong to the same viral subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae.
Varicella zoster virus can become latent in the nerve cell bodies
Years or decades after a chickenpox infection, the virus may break out of nerve cell bodies and travel down nerve axons to cause viral infection of the skin in the region of the nerve. The virus may spread from one or more ganglia along nerves of an affected segment and infect the corresponding dermatome (an area of skin supplied by one spinal nerve) causing a painful rash.
Although the rash usually heals within two to four weeks, some sufferers experience residual nerve pain for months or years, a condition called post-herpetic neuralgia. Exactly how the virus remains latent in the body, and subsequently re-activates is not understood.
The incidence rate increases with age. There are natural health products that will help alleviate the symptoms of shingles.
Lysine is a health product (a naturally occurring amino acid) that has been known to help confer a more robust immune response for Herpes. Zinc also confers a benefit due to its antioxidant properties and its role in enzymes that support proper immune functioning.
Vitamin C, is a potent antioxidant and has natural antiviral properties. In addition to supporting the immune system and potentially helping prevent outbreaks, vitamin C may provide relief from the nerve pain that often accompanies many viral infections.
Vitamin A and its precursor, beta-carotene, are potent antioxidants. In addition, vitamin A and beta-carotene may have some unique properties relevant in context of HSV infections: beta-carotene can help protect the skin from sunlight damage, which is a known trigger of HSV-1 outbreaks
Vitamin D may be a potent immunomodulator, vitamin D deficiency is associated with impaired immune function and increased susceptibility to infections
The herpes virus requires large amounts of the amino acid arginine to replicate properly. Lysine has a similar structure to arginine and antagonises these pro-replication effects, making it harder for the virus to replicate - diets rich in lysine and low in arginine have been shown to help suppress viral replication.
Propolis is a mixture of several compounds (found in bee hives) that include flavonoids and polyphenols, many of which have anti-Herpes activity. Lactoferrin has natural antimicrobial properties and is able to help protect the body from bacterial, fungal, parasitic, and viral infections. Curcumin is thought to help the body combat many infections, including those caused by viruses, and has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. Licorice may have antiviral activity against several viruses, including many herpes viruses.
Red marine algae has a reputation for successfully treating shingles, the adult form of HZV. Fucoidon, found in most brown seaweeds is considered the most potent anti-viral, showing strong activity against Herpes Simplex 1, HIV 1 and H-Cytomeglovirus. Brown seaweed supplements such as bladderwrack, kelp etc are therefore also recommended for helping reduce the severity of symptoms of other herpes viruses including shingles and chickenpox.
Excellent product .....always buy this Vit C ..its potent and easy to absorb ...
One of the better Vit C I have taken
Was recommended this and I must say it is a very good product. Very gentle on my stomach and works for 24 hour!
Great for the blues
Fantastic product. Was in the habit of crying most days and thinking life was a pile of shite but since taking St Johns Wort the sun has come out again, I am feeling optimistic and am moving forward once again. Would recommend if you are going through a tough time and feeling down. I take this with B complex and magnesium.

Chicken Pox Parties
Would you go to a chicken pox party? It’s a question I have pondered myself. Chicken pox parties used to be a regular occurrence and were even promoted by GPs. Common understanding was that children […]
