Molasses

Molasses is a thick, dark, strongly flavoured by-product of sugar cane refining and sugar production, similar in consistency to honey or treacle, and rich in numerous minerals. Produced by boiling the juice of sugar cane or sugar beets, molasses is naturally high in sugar, yet contains significant levels of iron, magnesium, calcium, as well as manganese, zinc and the B vitamin group. It's suitable for use in cooking or as a dietary supplement.

Molasses has been used for centuries as a health tonic, and is a traditional food product in many cultures around the world. Formed from the repeated boiling of sugar cane juice in the production of sugar, it is a very rich-tasting syrup with a dense nutrient profile. One of the best natural sources of iron, magnesium, vitamin B6 and numerous other minerals, it can also be used as a culinary product and is a key ingredient in numerous desserts, bread and baked goods, as well as being used in the production of yeast and beer.

Choose from a number of molasses products, including blackstrap molasses – the lowest-sugar and strongest flavoured molasses – and cranberry molasses.
