Diarrhoea Relief

Diarrhoea (alternatively diarrhea in North America) stemming from the Greek dia "through" + rheo "flow" meaning "flowing through" (which is pretty self-explanatory,) is the condition of having three or more loose or liquid bowel movements per day. The most common root cause is gastroenteritis, which is usually caused by a bacterial infection in your stomach or gut.

“My love for you is like diarrhoea...I can’t hold it in”

Diarrhoea (alternatively diarrhea in North America) stemming from the Greek dia "through" + rheo "flow" meaning "flowing through" (which is pretty self-explanatory,) is the condition of having three or more loose or liquid bowel movements per day.

The most common cause is gastroenteritis. Which is caused by (usually) a bacterial infection in your stomach or gut.

Oral rehydration solutions with modest amounts of salts and zinc tablets are the treatment of choice and have been estimated to have saved 50 million children in the developing world, in the past 25 years. In cases where these rehydration solutions are not available, homemade solutions are often used.

The loss of fluids through diarrhoea can cause dehydration and electrolyte disturbances such as potassium deficiency or other salt imbalances.

There are natural health remedies available to help with diarrhoea. Primarily we need to get rid of the harmful bacteria (causing gastroenteritis) in your stomach - you could benefit from taking supplements containing ‘friendly bacteria’ (e.g. primadophilus reuteri) which help outcompete the harmful bacteria causing the diarrhoea.

NZ native herb Koromiko (Hebe stricta) is a specific herbal diarrhoea remedy that works quickly and effectively to treat diarrhoea and as a general bowel detox. During the Second World War, NZ troops suffering from diarrhoea and dysentery in overseas postings were sent Koromiko leaves which were chewed raw or drunk as an infusion.

I tried Slippery Elm from bio balance for the first time a couple months back and since I didn't know what slippery elm should be like I thought it was ok. It didn't turn into a smooth texture at all, but more of a frothy texture with a lot of grit in it. I had expected a much smoother texture. It was not particularly easy to swallow due to the texture being gritty. But it did mix nicely into my porridge in the morning. And it did help with some of my bowel problems although not as much as I had hoped. But when this particular product went out of stock I ended up trying the Lotus brand (which unfortunately is not sold by healthpost). I have to say that Lotus brand is much better! It turns into a nice smooth texture and is much easier to drink without all the grit. It also helped a lot more with my bowel problems. So after trying the Lotus brand, I would not really recommend this bio balance brand, even though it is certified organic. It is not as effective as the Lotus brand. But that is just my personal experience. It may be very good for other people.
