Incontinence / Urinary Incontinence Info

Urinary incontinence (also known as involuntary urination or enuresis,) is any involuntary leakage of urine. It can be a common and distressing problem, with profound impacts on quality of life. Urinary incontinence almost always results from an underlying treatable medical condition but is under-reported to healthcare practitioners.

WOMEN: The most common types of urinary incontinence in women are stress-related incontinence and urge urinary incontinence. Women with both problems experience varying types of urinary incontinence. Stress urinary incontinence is caused by loss of support of the urethra which is usually a consequence of damage to pelvic support structures as a result of childbirth. It is characterized by leaking of small amounts of urine with activities which increase abdominal pressure such as coughing, sneezing and lifting. Urge urinary incontinence is caused by uninhibited contractions of the detrusor muscle. It is characterized by leaking of large amounts of urine in association with insufficient warning to get to the bathroom in time.

The physical examination will focus on looking for signs of medical conditions causing incontinence, such as tumours that block the urinary tract, stool impaction, and poor reflexes or sensations, which may be evidence of a nerve-related cause.

The urinary tract is usually quite resistant to bacterial imbalances because the low pH of urine, presence of urea and constant urine flow helps to retard the build-up of potentially harmful bacteria. Chronic recurring bladder imbalances are generally problematic to treat.

Determining the underlying cause of chronic recurring bladder imbalances is important for a successful outcome. Structural abnormalities and environmental and dietary factors such as excessive sugar consumption, food allergies, nutritional deficiencies, and infections should all be considered.

While urinary incontinence affects older men more often than younger men, the onset of incontinence can happen at any age. Incontinence is treatable and often curable at all ages.

MEN: Incontinence in men usually occurs because of problems with muscles that help to hold or release urine. The body stores urine—water and wastes removed by the kidneys—in the urinary bladder, a balloon-like organ. The bladder connects to the urethra, the tube through which urine leaves the body.

There are some natural health remedies that may help with incontinence. For example Damiana has been said to be one of the most popular and safest of all plants claimed to restore the natural urinary capacities and functions when the system is run down.

As a diuretic and urinary antiseptic, damiana is useful in the treatment of urinary infections such as cystitis and urethritis, incontinence, nephritis and prostatitis. This action is partly due to the constituent arbutin, which is converted into hydroquinone (a strong urinary antiseptic) in the urinary tubules.

Again, damiana is a rich source of vitamins A, C and niacin (vitamin B3) and may be beneficial in controlling urinary incontinence. Echinacea and cranberry can also help.

Cornsilk, cranberry, buchu, yarrow, marshmallow, uva ursi and celery seeds are all useful herbs for tonifying and strengthening the urinary tract.

  • Extremely helping for bowels

This product has been amazing for irritable bowel and acid reflux. Normalised bowel movements with a week on taking two a day. It's been years since bowel movements have been normal so am thrilled. I actually bought it for acid reflux/burning feeling in stomach which has also calmed this down. Also great if you suffer from excessive wind as I have now and then. Highly recommend. Will continue using.
