Valerian Info

Valerian acts on the central nervous system to stimulate its ability to calm and relax the body. It has a sedative effect on the higher nerve centres. It might help alleviate aches and pains and relax the whole body, promoting good sleep.

In medieval Europe its properties were so highly esteemed it was called ‘All Heal’. The part of the plant used by herbalists is the root, containing volatile oils and alkaloids.

Valerian Benefits

Valerian’s powerful nervine, carminative and antispasmodic actions give it a role in cases of nervous tension, stress, excitability, hysteria, and the associated symptoms of these states such as neuralgia, insomnia and colic. It will help with disturbed sleep patterns and improve sleep quality. As such, valerian is a natural alternative to the benzodiazepine group of medical drugs, without the adverse effects.

Valerian Side Effects

Studies show no evidence of drowsiness or physical addiction, or any other adverse effects. Take as directed.

Not recommended to combine with alcohol or benzodiazepines, as this may increase the sedative effect. Caution re use during pregnancy unless prescribed by a medical herbalist.

  • Works well


    I went through a stage of waking up in the night and I just couldn't get back to sleep - this really helped as I either didn't wake up or if I did I went back to sleep easily. It didn't knock me out cold, I still woke up if my kids woke up - I was just able to resettle a lot better. When I first took it I felt the effects and felt very sleepy within half and hour but after a few nights it didn't hit me as hard. The only reason I won't give it a 5 star is because I do feel a bit groggy in the morning, it lifts after a few hours though.



  • This did not work for me


    I have been increasing the dosage to see if I needed a higher dose. But even taking 5 a night did nothing. I have yet to find something to help me get a good nights sleep.
