A legacy born from performance

The history of Vocalzone Throat Pastilles begins with William Lloyd, born in Carmarthenshire, Wales, in 1874. His career as a respected throat specialist intertwined with that of his great friend, the world-renowned tenor Enrico Caruso.

Created for The Great Caruso

While serving as a surgeon at the Throat Hospital and later at Fulham Hospital, William Lloyd developed a reputation among London’s operatic, stage, and music hall performers. When Caruso suffered from a throat complaint, William created a unique throat remedy for him. The results were so remarkable that Caruso kept Lloyd as his physician and travelling companion for 15 years.

From one performer to the world

Together with his brother Walter Lloyd, a qualified chemist, William established “The Vocalzone Factory” near their birthplace in Carmarthen. Marketed as “The Throat Pastille Created for Just One Man – The Great Caruso”, Vocalzone quickly became a national brand. The company, Walter Lloyd and Son, has traded continuously from the same address since 1850.

An enduring family legacy

After William’s passing in 1948, Vocalzone was passed down through his family, later sold to an American firm, and eventually moved to Ernest Jackson in Crediton, where it continues to be produced using the original formula.

In the 1990s, Vocalzone was purchased by Ian Ponsford for Kestrel Healthcare, and in 2001 he founded his own company to bring the brand back under family ownership. Today, Vocalzone remains dedicated to supporting performers of every kind with the same trusted formula that once soothed The Great Caruso.
